FOR WHO
This training is suitable for anyone who wants to get more insight and understanding of typography. The training can be interested for data practitioners, data analysts, researchers and designers.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
December 1 (10:00 - 16:00) and December 2 (10:00 - 13:00)
Training Typography in Data Visualisation
Typography plays a crucial role in how we read, understand, and engage with data. In this hands-on training, we'll explore how typefaces can shape the hierarchy, clarity, and character of a data visualisation.
Typography is not only about legibility, but also about creating structure, rhythm, and meaning. In data visualisation, every typographic choice - from the typeface and size to spacing, alignment, and contrast - can influence how information is perceived and understood. By treating typography as an integral part of the visual system, rather than an afterthought, we can create visualisations that are not only clearer and more accessible, but also more distinctive and engaging.
By the end of the training participants will be able to:
- understand how typography influences the clarity, hierarchy, emotional impact, and character of a data visualisation.
- Select and combine typefaces that are appropriate for the purpose, tone, and visual language of a data visualisation.
- Apply typographic principles such as size, weight, spacing, alignment, and contrast to improve readability, hierarchy, and navigation of information.
- Assess typefaces for different sizes, formats, and writing systems, ensuring readability and visual consistency across applications and global audiences.
- Develop, test, and refine typographic solutions through sketching and redesign, using typography as an integral part of the overall visualisation system
Content
Through a series of practical and theoretical sections, we'll look at how to choose and combine typefaces, match the tone of voice, establish typographic hierarchy, and use scale, weight, spacing and alignment to make data easier to navigate and interpret. We'll also explore how typography can support, rather than compete with, the information being communicated.
This training includes both practical and theoretical elements, across different parts which address the key topics of Expression and Emotions, Size, Usage, and Language.
Each part will focus on the following aspects:
- The impact of emotions on type and basic letter drawing principles
- The relevance of size when designing type and the adaptations needed for each intended use
- How typographic expression can be translated to other writing systems to ensure consistency when communicating with global audiences
- How to discern if a typeface is suitable for large (display) or small (text) size use, and the design features required for different formats
Plenty of time is dedicated to sketching, designing, and redesigning; both on paper as well as online. Participants need to bring a laptop with Indesign or Figma installed.
Participants are also encouraged to work on their own examples during the second part of the training.
